Foto Friday

This Friday's photo was taken on the 12th of this month during a day-trip to Brighton, South England. As you can see, the day was a stinker...

... and the sun continues to beat down on us! The average temperature this week has been around 29 degrees C with more of this heat to come in August apparently!

Cruising the fjords

I spent this last weekend cruising the Norwegian Fjords with friends. What an experience; the views were magnificent and the weather was beautiful!

Our little adventure started with a 3 hour train journey from London to Newcastle, where we boarded our ferry/cruise ship. From here we sailed overnight to Stavanger on the south-west coast of Norway. A short stop in Stavanger then we headed north, first to Haugesund and finally on to Bergen. By the time we got to Bergen, the sun was roasting after a foggy Friday night and Saturday morning.

We had two hours in Bergen, so we decided to ride the funicular to the top of Mount Floyen for a view of the fjord. It wasn't cheap, but was well worth the ride!

The return journey was the same in reverse. Back to Haugesund, then to Stavanger which we left at midnight arriving back in Newcastle at 6pm on Sunday.

Moments to remember: On-board BBQ while leaving Newcastle(!); getting tipsy on VERY expensive beer and listening to the terrible band in the bar; eye-popping scenery while sailing up the fjords between the hundreds of little islands; the orange-tainted sunset at 10.30pm on Saturday night; whipping 'The King' at his own game (more than once); sunning ourselves on the deck; a visit to the bridge and meeting the Captain; almost not getting our 3 month old son back into the UK because he has no visa (but that's a different story that I'll blog later)!

Below are some of the photos and panoramas that we took.

OK, so it's not Friday, but I'm away this weekend and I'm not getting up at 4am just to post a photo before I leave! I'm not that dedicated a blogger!!

Today's photo was taken a very long time ago when I first came to the UK (1993). It is one of the University buildings in Cambridge. I was trying hard to capture some colour from the sunset too, but unsuccessfully.

London heatwave

This has got to be the best London summer I have ever experienced! It's now 6.30pm and the temperature outside is a mild 32 degrees C!! And tomorrow is meant to be even hotter!

Now as a Saffa I don't mind the heat or the sun, but boy are these Poms suffering! You know what they say about mad dogs and Englishmen. Well, it's true. They sit outside all day in the blistering heat, sipping on their pints of lager, shirts off and, of course, no suntan lotion. Tough as nails! But wait until tomorrow. Those same ferrari-red lobsters will be back in the pub, complaining about how damn hot it is!

The best part is that the BBC reckons we could hit a record 37 degrees on Wednesday!

On a less exciting note, I am off to the physiotherapist tomorrow for my third session of 'ruk n pluk' on my shoulder. My old war injuries have been acting up so I thought I'd better use that private health care that the taxman is charging me for and fix myself up a little before the rugby season starts again.

And speaking of rugby, did any of you bother to watch the end of the Aussie v SA game? Can it even be called a game? "Hak, hak, hak! Die Bokke was kak!"

It's weekend again and that means photo time again too!

This week's pic was taken last July at Wimbledon on Court 2. The player on the right is Lindsay Davenport and the poor girl on the right (don't remember her name) got trampled by her; 6-0, 6-0!

Back in the saddle

After a hard day at work (well, it wasn't that hard but it was about 40 degrees C indoors!), I finally managed to find time to go for a ride on my trusty steed again! It's been just over a month since I last rode. Slacker!

It wasn't all my fault. I finally managed to sort out my brakes (lack of brakes actually) on Saturday. Also, with the current heat wave going on, there was no way I was going riding. Even today I only ventured out at around 7.30pm! I use the phrase 'heat wave' very lightly. It's been between 28 and 32 degrees with no wind for at least two weeks now! Not very nice in London - wish I was on Camps Bay Beach!

Also, there has been the problem of work what with that World Cup Football thingy going on. Thankfully now that England are out, there isn't too much stress anymore! Got to start planning for Notting Hill Carnival now...

Which reminds me: it's almost a year since you came to visit cuz! Now who's the slacker!

Today's photos is one of my favourite underwater photos. It features a clownfish (or anemonefish) in a sea anemone with 4 or 5 spotted damselfish swimming on the left of the picture.

These fish are actually related. And no, this is not Nemo. Nemo is a Clarke's anemonefish and this photo is of a Two-banded anemonefish.
